It was on a hot summer afternoon back in 2001. I was coming home from work and I was tired. I just wanted to get home as soon as possible. This was when I was working in White Plains so I usually took the Metro North home from work and where I get off there's this huge hill I have to walk up. So when I got to the top of this hill I went inside this cab base that's on the corner. I told the dispatcher where I was going and he told me it would be a 20 minute wait. I was tired so I told him to forget it and I left. I walked around the corner in front of the supermarket where there are usually a couple of cabs there. I was right! There was only one cab and I was quick to get it.
As I was about to get in I noticed an old woman that lived on my block with a lot of groceries in her cart. I knew she wouldn't be able to push that cart all the way home with all those groceries in the blazing heat. At the moment I just wanted to jump in and tell him my destination. But then I thought, "If it were my grandma I would want someone to look out for her". So, I insisted that she take the cab instead. I helped her with her groceries and put them in the trunk with her shopping cart. I wasn't sure if she has cab fare so I gave the cabbie the fare and I told her to take care and have a nice day. What I was really thinking was "enjoy my ride".
Even though I was tired I'd rather walk those three blocks than hearing about an old woman who passed out on her way home from the supermarket. I wouldn't want that on my conscience, knowing I could have done something to prevent it. So I did! I just seemed like the humane thing to do.
What good deed have you done?
That was very nice of you! It is so important to give and give from the heart!! not becuase you expect something in return. I try to give as much as possible but I know that I am also guilty of not giving as much as I should. The most rewarding thing I did recently was volunteering at a soup kitchen, I think this is something everyone should do in their
ReplyDeletelifetime. It is humbling and eye opening, we have so much to be thankful for and often take things for granted.
