Why is NY Terrestrial Radio Scared to Break New Artist?

Hey Dolls,

I had a insightful conversation with one of my dear friends today about music, life and the future of Hip Hop. What struck me the most during that chat was how supportive southern states are when it comes to new emerging artists. New York on the other hand is one of those states that only accepts you after someone else gives you the "Yea you Poppin" stamp! It's what I call "dick-riding" in this industry. To me this is one of the reasons terrestrial radio is failing. That and the lack of good on air talent but I'll touch on that in a minute.

It's common for unsigned artists to promote themselves via the web such as myspace, twitter, youtube, etc. But to get noticed from just those avenues of branding is amazing! Will it ever happen in New York? Would a normal New Yorker just walk up to a random person from recognizing them on the web for their talents give a compliment or lend a hand to help in some way? Not likely! I don't know why this state is so bent up on keeping one another down. It's too stressful. Look at the state of New York Hip Hop. You have northern rappers such as 50 Cent and Eminem whose sole purpose is to destroy other northern rappers to get to the top. Then you have the southern artists such as Jeezy, T.I, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Ludacris, etc who all embrace each other. This is why Hip Hop in the south is so affluent. People open your eyes and see this game for what it is and work it to your best advantage.

I for one am a big supporter for Internet radio. Not because I host a show, The Industry Takeover every Saturday 12pm-2pm, on PNCRADIO.fm but because it gives the on air personalities and DJ's the chance to help emerging artists out by letting their music be heard in a regular rotation. We have the luxury of doing so with out Program Directors and Music Coordinators telling us what we have to play, when we have to play it, and who we can have on the show as guests.

I been in love with HIP HOP for as long as I can remember and I will be damned if I take part the DESTRUCTION of HIP HOP!

  1. The New York State on Mind is go out and get your own. When it's come to Radio, these vet's is not going anyway and when they do get someone they already have a name ie.. whoopie and now Salt and pepper on WBLS. Internet radio is a great way to make statement but most of these Internet Radio dont understand they need to make a name on their own and Corp machine will come to them. They just hoping someone just going to discover them and that's rarely the case. The interent radio station got to work better to brand themself and created opportunity for them, b/c nobody else will.

  3. well u know me ive always been a fan of southern music or "trap rap" as i like to call it cuz they are way more fun an they actually help each other "get on" unlike our east coast rapper who blame the south for taking over when they dont try to bring the east coast back and as far as radio here goes it sux ass cuz they make it hard for new rappers to get anytype of airplay but they will play the same 10 tracks in heavy rotation all day long and the club djs aint no damn better. There are a long of talented people out there an i seriously hope NYC radio will given them a chance

  5. I AGREE, THE NY STATE OF MIND TOWARDS HIP HOP HAS TARNISHED! AND AS STATED THE SOUTH DOES EMBRACE & NY NEGLECTS. I BELIEVE THE COMRADERY BETWEEN NY ARTIST OR NY UPPER-ECHELON ARTISTS IS SELFISH AND DISRESPECTFUL! 50 CENT FOR EXAMPLE IS DESERVES MUCH BLAME. EVERY SINCE HE DEBUTED IN 2003 IS WHEN NY TANKED!! RIGHT BEFORE HIM, THE SOUTH WAS HOT, NY WAS STILL RELEVANT ETC. 50 HAS CREATED OR I SHOULD SAY GIVEN OFF SO MUCH TENSION BETWEEN NY ARTISTS THAT NO ONE CAN COLLAB WITH EACH OTHER!! THINK ABOUT IT! YOU WONT SEE A JIM JONES, TONY YAYO, JADA & FAT JOE CLUB BANGER!! OR A FABOLOUS, LLOYD BANKS, STYLES & CAMRON TRACK! BACK IN 98' IT WAS POSSIBLE! NOT ANYMORE
